Los Angeles to Borrego Springs

Two good ways to drive from Los Angeles to Borrego Springs — the faster desert route through the Coachella Valley, and the slower mountain route through Temecula wine country.

Route 1 · Desert route (usually fastest)

Take I-10 east through Banning and past the Palm Springs turnoff to Indio. Continue south on CA-86 along the west side of the Salton Sea, then turn west onto County Road S22 (Borrego Salton Seaway). S22 drops through the Borrego Badlands straight into town.

Route 2 · Mountain route (more scenic)

Take I-15 south to Temecula, then CA-79 east through Aguanga and Warner Springs. Pick up S2 and then S22, which descends the Montezuma Grade — a winding road with wide views over the Borrego Valley. Allow extra time and drive it in daylight if you can.

Worth stopping for

  • Cabazon Dinosaurs — a quick roadside stop on I-10.
  • Date shakes in the Coachella Valley along CA-86 or CA-111.
  • Temecula Old Town or wineries on the mountain route.
  • The Montezuma Grade lookouts for your first view of the valley.

Before you go

  • Cell coverage can drop on S22 and the Montezuma Grade — download offline maps.
  • Bring water for every passenger, even on a short drive.
  • Summer afternoons regularly pass 100°F; check your car's coolant and tires.

Conditions change — confirm roads, hours and closures before you go.
