Best Easy Hikes in Anza-Borrego

Three short, well-known hikes in California's largest state park — a palm oasis, a slot canyon and a seasonal waterfall.

Borrego Palm Canyon

The park's signature hike, about three miles round trip from the Borrego Palm Canyon campground to a grove of native California fan palms. Watch the canyon walls for Peninsular bighorn sheep. Moderate, with rocky stretches near the end.

The Slot

A short walk through a narrow, twisting sandstone canyon, reached by a dirt road off S22. Under two miles, mostly flat, with a few spots where you'll turn sideways. Very popular with families.

Hellhole Canyon to Maidenhair Falls

A longer, more rugged hike of roughly six miles round trip to a seasonal waterfall fed by winter rains. Best after a wet winter; expect boulder scrambling near the falls.

Desert hiking basics

  • Stop by the park visitor center for current conditions and maps.
  • Dogs are not allowed on most park trails.
  • Turn back when half your water is gone.
  • Wear closed shoes — cactus spines are everywhere.

Conditions change — confirm roads, hours and closures before you go.
