Off-Roading Around Borrego

Hundreds of miles of dirt roads in the state park, plus a dedicated off-highway vehicle park next door. Here is what is allowed where.

Inside Anza-Borrego Desert State Park

Only street-legal, licensed vehicles are allowed, and only on established roads. Popular routes include Font's Point Wash, Canyon Sin Nombre and the Coyote Canyon area. Coyote Canyon closes seasonally in summer to protect bighorn sheep water sources — confirm dates before you go.

Ocotillo Wells SVRA

East of Borrego along CA-78, Ocotillo Wells is a state off-highway vehicle area where dirt bikes, ATVs and side-by-sides can ride across open dunes and washes. Local outfitters offer guided Jeep and UTV tours.

Rules of the desert

  • Air down tires in deep sand and re-inflate before paved roads.
  • Never drive off established roads in the state park.
  • Travel with a second vehicle in remote areas.
  • Tell someone your route and return time — cell signal is unreliable.

Conditions change — confirm roads, hours and closures before you go.
